Biography

Johannes Schmieder is enrolled in the Ph.D. program of the economics department at Columbia University. His research focuses on topics in labor and health economics. He has been working on projects evaluating the impact of environmental hazards and public policy on infant health. In particular, this includes a joint paper with Janet Currie and Matthew Neidell on the effect of ambient air pollution on infant health, a joint paper with Janet Currie on the effect of toxic releases on health at birth, and a paper with Mariesa Herrmann on the health effects of workplace and restaurant smoke bans. In labor economics he has been working on issues such as the long term effect of job loss on workers' careers, the role of implicit contracts in the labor market, and the hiring and wage policies of new firms.
